Specimen note 2 · Card 02

What a research biobank is

A biobank stores samples for future research under governance rules. It is not the same as the clinical lab that runs your day-to-day medical tests.

The short version

  1. Biobanks store samples under research rules.
  2. Future studies may need separate review.
  3. Consent should say whether commercial research is allowed.

Governance

Ethics boards and policies decide who can request samples and for what kinds of questions.

Broad versus specific consent

Some forms ask permission for a wide range of future studies; others stay narrow. Read the difference.

Withdrawal

Ask whether you can request destruction of remaining samples and what that process looks like.

Questions to bring

What is stored, where, for how long, and who decides later use.
