Biospecimens: the samples behind many study questions

A biospecimen is a sample of blood, tissue, saliva or another material collected for research. Many study questions depend on what those samples show.

The short version

  1. Samples are collected with consent that explains the purpose.
  2. Some samples are used only for the current study; others may be stored.
  3. You can ask what will be collected and how long it is kept.

Common types

Blood draws, cheek swabs, urine and leftover tissue from a procedure are frequent examples.

Consent language

Forms should say what will be collected, whether leftover samples may be stored, and whether you can decline storage.

Identifiers

Samples may be coded so researchers do not see your name day to day. Ask how coding works.
